Full Analysis of Ball Valve Sealing Surface Selection: How to Make Accurate Selection Based on Conditions
Date:2026-01-11 12:00:00 Author:Zhejiang Yonglian Valve Group Co., Ltd.

The selection of the sealing surface for a ball valve involves multiple factors, including the type of medium, working conditions, operating temperature, surrounding environment, and the performance requirements of the sealing surface. The following is a detailed analysis of the selection of the sealing surface for a ball valve:

1. Medium type

Different media have different requirements for the material of the sealing surface. For example: for acidic and alkaline media, the fluorine-lined series can better resist corrosion, such as polytetrafluoroethylene; for media with severe particle erosion, select hard alloy or ceramic seals, which have relatively strong erosion resistance; for gas media, select fluorine-lined seals. The fluorine series has a maximum temperature of 120°C. If the temperature of the higher-temperature gas is higher, PFA and PPL series can be selected.

2. Working Conditions

The working conditions of a ball valve, such as pressure and flow rate, also affect the selection of the sealing surface. For instance, in high-pressure and high-flow situations, materials with high structural strength, good wear resistance and corrosion resistance need to be chosen. In cases where the sealing force is highly demanded, a sealing element coated with PTFE on the surface can be selected to reduce air leakage.

3. Operating Temperature

The operating temperature is also an important factor to consider when choosing the sealing surface material. For example: In environments with lower temperatures, elastic materials such as silicone, EPDM, etc. can be selected. In high-temperature environments, materials with a wider temperature range need to be chosen, such as PFA, PPL, etc.

4. Performance requirements for sealing surfaces

In addition to the aforementioned factors, the performance requirements of the sealing surface also need to be considered, such as corrosion resistance, erosion resistance, and abrasion resistance. These performance requirements are usually related to the nature of the medium, working conditions, and the service life of the sealing surface.

Corrosion resistance: Choosing materials with good corrosion resistance can extend the service life of the sealing surface.

Abrasion resistance: For high-speed flowing media, it is necessary to select materials with good abrasion resistance to prevent the sealing surface from being damaged by abrasion.

Abrasion resistance: During the opening and closing process of the ball valve, the sealing surfaces will rub against each other. Therefore, it is necessary to select materials with good abrasion resistance to reduce wear.

5. Common Sealing Surface Materials and Their Characteristics

Rubber: It has good elasticity and sealing properties, but its temperature resistance and pressure resistance are limited.

Plastics: such as nylon, PTFE, etc., have the characteristics of good corrosion resistance and low friction coefficient.

Stainless steel: It has excellent corrosion resistance and heat resistance, and is suitable for the sealing surfaces of ball valves in special environments such as high pressure and high temperature.

Hard alloy: It has excellent comprehensive properties such as corrosion resistance, erosion resistance and scratch resistance, and has a long service life.

When choosing the sealing surface of a ball valve, it is recommended to comprehensively consider the above factors and make a reasonable selection based on the specific usage environment and requirements. You can consult professional engineers or experts in the relevant field to obtain more professional suggestions and guidance. At the same time, it is necessary to pay attention to choosing products produced by reputable manufacturers to ensure product quality and performance.
